Bredel Hose Pump Plays an Integral Role in TOMRA’s Sustainable Potato Peeling Solution

Bredel hose pumps are contributing to a sustainable solution for steam potato peeling provided by TOMRA Food which reduces water usage, water treatment and food waste.

The TOMRA Dry Peel Separator (DPS) uses Bredel as a dry-waste pump which enables food processors to reduce water usage and recover the potato skin and starch for use in animal feed or anaerobic digestion (biogas).

The steam peeled skin is separated using centrifugal force inside the TOMRA DPS and avoids the need for brush separators and water. From a drum that rotates at high speed, the peel waste flows to the Bredel hose pump, which transfers the material to the food processor’s storage location.

Selecting the Right Food and Beverage Pump

Food and beverage manufacturers rely on submersible wastewater pumps for proper disposal of liquid and solid waste. Improper pump selection can strain or cause system failure in these submersible pumps, creating extra maintenance to clear clogs, catastrophic production shutdowns, and/or annual excess capital expenditures to replace worn or failed equipment.

There isn’t a “one size fits all” solution. Each Food & Beverage category faces its own set of waste challenges. The solution for a bottling plant, may not be the best solution for a poultry plant.

How Do You Pump High Viscosity Fluids?

For high viscosity fluids you will need a really strong and powerful Viscous Pump. You’re going to need a viscous pump that can handle the higher pressures required to move heavy, viscous fluids. Where a centrifugal pump is good on water or juice, it will not pump caramel or tomato paste! Kecol’s Viscous Pumps use Piston pumps for most of our high viscosity pump duties as they offer a partial vacuum to help suck the product into the pump, we can also use other pump types such as rotary lobe, twin-screw, progressive cavity or other pumps from our portfolio.
